It's been a long cold winter and we have been pretty busy. The boys are growing SO fast and I am having a hard time keeping up with them. Our latest adventure is snowboarding. They have taken 2 lessons and are learning very quickly. We are all going back this Sunday and even I am going to take lessons!

First pre-season game

Chris' team played their first pre-season game against Hillcrest and it ended up in a tie, 14-14. The boys did really well and got their first taste of how important teamwork is. Chris is #42 and plays wide receiver on offense and cornerback on defense. They ran Chris' favorite reverse play on offense and he gained 8 yards for a first down right before the game was over. Unfortunately, the next play didn't go very well for the offense and time ran out. We are all excited for their first game of the season next Saturday!

Golf.... good times, good times

I took Michael golfing on Friday at Mick Riley. We golfed nine holes and had a really good time. After our poor performance on the first hole we decided not to take score but just have fun. He did really well and although we didn't keep score, we kept up with the guys in front of us. He was really excited and can't wait to go again. I, on the other hand, need a little more instruction before I attempt it again. Yes, it is the sport that makes grown men cry.... (and women)

Chris' first scrimmage

Chris had his first scrimmage against Olympus on Thursday and his team didn't do very well. They have a lot to learn before their next one that is against a different Olympus team in a few days. Chris is playing halfback and did a pretty good job. Practices are going to be brutal this week.

Am I really ready for this? Football has started for Christopher. They practice five times a week for two hours each time. He is pretty gung ho about it so far, (he's only had two practices) and tonight after he ran for what seemed like days, we were walking to the car and he said to me, "Thanks mom for giving me the opportunity to play football." I was stunned and even got a little teary for a minute. I thought it was so sweet! (Ok, ten bucks says the coach told the whole team to tell that to their parents tonight...) He went on to say, "I hope that when I grow up and I play baseball and football they will both fit into my schedule. I just don't know how I could choose." I told him that many kids play both sports all the way through high school and do just fine. He then said, "No mom! When I go pro!" The kid has some crazy ambitions for just the second day. We will see how much he still likes it after they start practicing with their pads tomorrow night.

Summer, finally!

Now that it has stopped raining and finally become summer, I bought the boys a trampoline. They played on it for two days straight and slept on it once already. I can't get them off.

Uncle Mike's apartment complex has a great pool so we spent Sunday morning there. We swam and got incredibly sunburned. We all had fun though and will probably spend more time there this summer. It's like a mini vacation spot and we just have to go down the street!

Tonight was the Crown Colony Fun Day that marks the end of the 2009 season for the league. There were games, food, raffles, a silent auction and Bumble came to help hand out trophies and to hang out with the kids for the evening. We have met some great people this season and had an amazing experience. Christopher learned so much from his awesome coaches. He not only improved on his baseball skills but learned about sportsmanship and gained a great appreciation for the game. We can't wait until next year!!!

Sweet Maile girl is turning 1 on Monday! Her Papa and Tutu and Mom had a great big birthday party for her on Saturday and we all celebrated our first year with her. She got a ton of clothes and toys and many well wishes from all who attended. The kids all went swimming in kiddie pools and the adults enjoyed some great food. We even survived a very sudden thunderstrom that started while Kanani and Maile were opening presents. Everyone ran inside and the present opening continued in the living room while the kids had cake in the garage. It was a great way to say happy birthday to her and let her know how much we all love her.

Michael received his First Holy Communion this morning and according to him, he is now a man. We weren't allowed to take pictures during mass since there was a professional photographer there taking pictures for us. Hopefully, we will have access to them soon. Next year will be Christopher's turn. His dad's parents, his Nana, his stepmom and step siblings, and newest GodMother, Kanani were there. (He had two others that we don't really want to mention...) Kanani brought baby Maile and all sat in a row while Michael took communion with his parents and little brother behind him. We were all so proud of him. After mass, we tried to get pictures of the boys and Maile, but she wasn't happy with the way Michael was holding her as is apparent in the pictures I took. Hopefully, Kanani's turned out better than mine.

After struggling through the first half of the school year in math, (I mean REALLY struggling!) Michael has really been busting his butt to improve his grades. A couple of days ago he was trying to freak me out by telling me he had a letter from his teacher that was going to make me really mad. He whipped out a piece of paper and put it in front of my face. It was from the junior high he will be going to next year telling me "Your student has qualified, either through scores in Math or by teacher recommendation, to take the Algebra placement test for 7th grade." He was all smiles as I read it. What a kid!

This is huge!!!! He has made a complete turn around in less than six months with his school work and likes to remind me that his brother isn't the only smart one in the family. I like to tell him that that's the part of them that comes from me. His just came out later, that's all.

Our season has started!!! Christopher has started his Crown Colony baseball season as a Yankee and is having a great time. Of course, since I am psycho sports mom, I have weaseled my way into the tower to take score, announce, and run the scoreboard. It is honestly the best seat in the house!

They started the season with a win over the White Sox with a score of 12-2 in the fifth inning and the game being called due to the ten run rule. We did not fair as well on Saturday against the Reds as we lost 3-5. In spite of the loss, the kids played well. Christopher stole two bases and hit a sacrifice fly and earned his first RBI for the season.

Lola has joined our posse. She is very sweet and loves to play with the boys. She especially loves to play in the backyard with them and play catch with a tennis ball. She is fitting in quite nicely with Chi Chi and Cholo. They all run around chasing each other and stealing each others toys. We love her already!

Yesterday, we had a houseful of children and dogs. There was no school and Maile got to come over for the day as well. Michael was such a great helper!!!! He watched her very carefully to make sure that she did not hurt herself and took her flying when she would get a little fussy. She was jabbering with him and dancing and it was adorable!!!

He fed her applesauce for lunch and it was hilarious!!! She ended up with it all over her face and clothes. I had such a great time watching them interact with each other and I think Michael had a blast hanging out with her.

On March 20, 1951, James Michael Jarvi was born. He would have been 58 years old today. This picture was taken the day Michael was born, July 19, 1997. How sweet is the look on my dad's face as he holds his first grandson for the first time?

There are many special days throughout the year that I look back and reflect about my dad. Some are more sad than others. Today is not really about sadness. I have always thought it was significant that his birthday falls on the first day of spring. It is all about new beginnings and fresh starts. I like to think that he is with me sharing my pride in my boys and their acheivements and also cheering me on through it all as well. Not a day goes by that I don't miss him but today it is a different kind of feeling. He is happy, he is smiling, and he is pushing me along. I don't miss him today because I feel he has been with me since the day began...

I love you Dad.

Christopher has made the Pee Wee Yankees in the Crown Colony Baseball league! There are three practices per week and games start on April 3rd!!! Time for psycho sports mom to erupt!!!

Today Christopher tried out for baseball. It was pretty cold but the kids didn't seem to mind. We will find out in the next day or so what team he is on and when practices are scheduled. His first game is on April 3rd and it will be a summer of baseball from there on out.

The kids first fielded 3 grounders and 3 pop ups one at a time.

Then they hit 4 pitches and ran to first after the last one. Once they were done with that, they went in the outfield to shag balls that were being hit. We are all very excited for this season!

I got to spend some time with Maile on Friday while her mom was at school. She is getting so big so fast! She went with me to a doctor's appointment and was just an angel. When we got home, she seemed pretty determined to crawl. She scooted herself around the living room backwards and really wore herself out. And, unlike any baby I have ever seen, this child goes right to sleep when you put her in her crib for a nap. There is no fussing at all!! I don't know what magic trick Kanani used to get her to do that but it is amazing! I can't wait to hang out with her again.

So, the boys go with their dad and step siblings to "Walking with Dinosaurs" at the Energy Solutions Arena on Friday night. I am excited to see them and hear their stories about it, you know, maybe check out some dinosaur souvenirs. Instead, Christopher walks in with a poster of the Jazz dancers. He immediately asks me where the tape is and goes to hang it up on his wall in his room. Now it just hangs there for him to gander at and for me to just shake my head towards. All he can say about it is that they're his "chicks, man."

Hill Aerospace Museum

We went to the Hill Aerospace Museum today and saw all of the new exhibits that have been completed since we were last there. There is now a kids room that has flight simulators and costumes. There were also newer planes and laser guided missles that we had never seen before. We came away with personalized dog tags for the boys and some pretty cool pictures.

We had a really great Christmas. We made our "cookies for Santa" on Christmas Eve and had our family over on Christmas Day. There was lots of food, lots of dogs, (Aunt Kelly has 3)lots of presents, and lots of love. It was one of the best Christmases that I can remember having in a long time.

Michael has been gearing up for his school Christmas program by singing the two songs his class gets to sing all around the house. Much to my surprise, he has an amazing singing voice! I have heard him sing before, but it wasn't ever in a serious way. He would just belt out some random song and he would be silly about it. Now, he is perfectly pitched and does not miss a single note whether it is high or low. He never fails to surprise and impress me.

We had Christopher's birthday party a few days earlier than his actual birthday since it falls on Thanksgiving Day this year. His best friend from school, James was there, as well as his family and his God Mother. In this picture, he is dancing while everyone sings "Happy Birthday" to him before he blows out his candles. What a funny kid! Later, we had extra reason to celebrate because the University of Utah won against BYU in their yearly football rivalry game. It was a great day.

Christopher was referred by his teacher for gifted testing at his elementary school. He isn't even scared to take the test!

When they were little, I tried to teach both he and Michael a standard answer to flattering questions about themselves.

There will be no princesses or no cutsie girly costumes at my house, I'm afraid. My two boys are convinced that Halloween is supposed to be scary. Michael is a zombie and Christopher is the grim reaper this year. When we go costume shopping, I don't even try to convince them to be something humorous or cute. We always go to the section that houses ghouls, blood, and gore.

P.S. If you see these two out trick or treating this Halloween, tell them to go home and give their mother a big hug and a kiss.

Why is it that they are little one day and two seconds later, they are tall, handsome and talking to you like they are a 25 year old? Michael is growing into such a sweet, condsiderate young man. My baby with the blond hair and blue eyes is maturing before my very eyes and it makes me both proud and sad. I love him so very much.

The Second Grade Grim Reaper

Christopher got his Halloween costume last night and it is the Grim Reaper. He wore it all evening and kept calling himself "Death." "Death is kinda hungry right now." "Death wants to know where Michael is." And my favorite, "Death is ready to go to bed." I guess death does sleep in my house!

Today I took Michael, his friends Kohl and Jack, and Christopher to the AST Dew Tour. We watched the skate park preliminaries and the boys got lots of free stuff from the vendors. Michael won a new hat in the Playstation demonstration booth and the older boys chased down some "famous" skaters to get their autographs. We all had a really good time and I'm actually thinking of taking them back on Saturday to see the finals.

A couple of weeks ago, Maile came over and stayed with us while Kanani ran some errands. Michael had been begging me to let him hold her and I finally relented. I let him hold her on the couch while I got her a bottle. I handed him the bottle so he could feed her. He lasted about five minutes and then told me to come and get her because his arms were about to fall off. He asked me, "How do moms do it? I couldn't even hold her long enough for her to finish her bottle." I reminded him that moms are a superhuman species that have many special powers and enormous strength.

Well, our second trip to Yankee Stadium did not fair as well as our first. Christopher lost his mitt on the subway. We missed a foul ball that rolled under our seats and the Yanks lost in a big way to the Angels. We got some pretty good pictures though and Christopher got to be on the big screen marquee for a brief moment.

We had a great time and are very glad we went but it was really good to get home. Now we have to go back to life as usual and get ready for school to start. Woo hoo!

The New York Yankees did NOT allow the Orioles to sweep them at home and we were there to witness the occasion. Our seats were awesome, the train ride was actually fun, and the game was very exciting.

We have been waiting for months for our big trip to New York and it finally arrived. The flight was long and we were all tired when we arrived at 6:00 eastern time at our hotel, but it was well worth it. We are staying at the Westin Times Square and are within walking distance to a million places and fun things to do. The first day, we went to eat at Dave & Busters and then went to the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum. We hit the Yankee's souvenier shop and then went to see Space Chimps. Boy were we tired that first day!

The second day, we went on the tour bus ride around the city and spent three hours in line at the Empire State Building just to get to the top. That was a little bit frustrating but we jumped back on the tour bus to get back to the hotel in time for the broadway show we had tickets to. Unfortunately, it ended up that we were in the middle of Manhattan in rush hour traffic and we were not moving at all. We hopped off at Rockefeller Center and decided to walk the rest of the way. Strangely, it wasn't as far as we thought it was. Not only did we make it back in time, but we had a few minutes to spare to stop off at Ben & Jerry's for some ice cream. We then went to the Amsterdam Theatre to watch Mary Poppins. I thought the boys would be bored with it or even hate it, but they LOVED it! Michael told me that it must be the magic of Broadway.

This was Christopher's last season with the Murray Parks and Recreation league and next year we will be getting way serious with the Cal Ripkin league. We had a great time and can't wait to start again next year!

Michael turns 11!

It has been a long time since we have blogged because July has been such a crazy month. On July 19th, Michael turned 11. He keeps reminding everyone that he is only two years away from being a teenager. I keep having to remind him that a mother does not want to hear that yet. He thinks it's funny. We invited a few friends of his from school for a sleepover and a trip to Classic Skating. Everyone had a great time and the "pre-teens" tried to stay up all night playing video games. Only one of them made it to 8:00 am and then he zonked out for a few hours on the couch with the Wii controller in his hand. Michael got a lot of great gifts and money for our trip to New York. He is already planning his party for next year to try to top the fun of this one.

Some quality time with Baby Maile

Last Thursday, I convinced Kanani that Maile should have a sleepover at my house so that she and Chico could rest up for their big 4th of July BBQ. She was such a good baby and was an excellent model as I took a million pictures of her. She only woke up twice in the night, once at 2:00 am and the second at 5:00 am. She only got fussy when she was hungry or needed a diaper change. I sat and watched her make the funniest faces both when she slept and when she was awake. This little girl is such an angel!!!! I just love her so much. The boys were at their dad's house that night so it was just the two of us until about 10:00 am the next day. Once they got home, they were really excited that she was here. I put her in her bassinet in Michael's room and he turned on the tv. Maile, Michael, and Christopher watched cartoons for quite a while together. She just stared at the tv in awe the entire time. I'm sure it was all of the bright colors and sounds that she was interested in. It made for a funny scene. Hopefully we will get to watch her overnight again very soon!

Christopher has played two games so far with his team, the Royals. They don't really keep track of the runs scored since it's Coach Pitch but if you ask him, they win every time. Tonight he used his wooden bat instead of an aluminum one because it is good luck and it is what they use in the majors. He got a great infield hit in the first inning and later made a great defensive play by beating the runner home and getting him out. This kid is serious!

June 20th

It has been four years since Grandpa Mike died. We miss him and think about him all the time but especially on Father's Day and June 20th since that was when he died in 2004. We are growing up fast and lots of people that knew him tell us that we remind them of our Grandpa in lots of ways. Here are a few things that mom tells us he used to say:

It only takes one "aw shit" to wipe out a whole bunch of "atta boys."

I don't think that (insert food here) looks very good. Let me try some to make sure it's ok for you to eat. (Then takes a bite of our food.)

What would you rather do, pay for this one repair or make a huge car payment every month? You may be smart but sometimes you have no common sense. (This was said specifically to our mom, hee hee.)

There are many other "Jarvisms" but are they probably not very appropriate for a family blog. They are funny though, very funny.

He had this hat that he got while the Pittsburgh Pirates were playing in the World Series in 1979 and he wore it a lot around that time. Our Nana found it recently and gave it to Christopher since he is the big baseball fan. Christopher was elaborated and everyone (but mom) was shocked that he knew which team it belonged to when he saw it. He loves it and wears it proudly although it's a tad too large.

We miss our Grandpa very much and mom misses her dad. We love you Grandpa Mike!

Take me out to the ballgame

Baseball season has started for Chris and we are way excited. He had his first practice on Thursday and not only did well, but had a great time. His team is the Royals and these kids are pretty determined NOT to have the same record as the team they are named after. It's going to be a pretty busy season with two games a week and practice once a week. The first game is on Monday against the Red Sox and we will follow up the game with plenty of pictures and video updates on this blog. Play ball!

The Great White Hunter

It's now official. Michael has passed hunter's safety and has his small game license to kill stuff. It was a pretty grueling couple of weeks worth of classes and he was a little bummed because he had homework in the summer, but he is pretty happy with the results. Congrats Michael!

It's Christopher Peterson!

He was the fastest boy in the first grade when they did their Presidential Fitness Gold Medal Mile. He received a medal that was engraved on the back with his achievement and his name. It was presented to him at the end of the year awards program at his school. His teacher told me that all you have to do to motivate him is to tell him there is a trophy involved and he will bust his butt to win it. I know that he is incredibly competitive and stubborn and becomes completely consumed with the task at hand. Hmmm. I wonder where he gets that from?

Maile Alexa Gallegos was born June 1st at 12:44 AM after a long and painful labor for her mother, Kanani. (Wow, that's weird to say!) She is so beautiful! She was a pretty popular little girl with a ton of visitors during her first day. Both mom and baby are doing well and dad, well, after a little bit of overwhelming panic, is doing great too.

Michael was talking about how hard his life is since he has to do so much homework and has to be so responsible. He said to me, "I wish I could go back to being a baby again. I could just lay there and be adored and eat, sleep and poop all day." Oh to dream.

1st Grade Field Trip to Murray Park

The first graders of Twin Peaks Elementary walked to Murray Park on Wednesday, May 28th for their last field trip of the school year. Christopher and his buddies, Braydon and James, were in a group together and had a great time playing frisbee, making sand castles, rolling down the steep hill and eating lunch at the park. The Murray City Police department helped us cross all of the busy roads while we walked to and from the park. It was a very warm day and it gave the kids their first taste of summer before school ends. They all played so hard that they were exhausted during the walk back to the school. Some even sat down on the sidewalk while we waited for our turn to cross the streets. Funny, funny kids.

Salt Lake Bees Baseball Clinic

Today the boys went to the Salt Lake Bees Baseball Clinic for the Knothole Club. We got to Franklin Covey Field at 10:00 AM and although it was more cold and windy than we would have liked, we were still excited. They broke the kids into different age groups and had five different sections for them to go to and each section was led by a different player from the team. The kids learned basics about infielding, pitching, catching, batting (which was done in the Bees' batting cages!) and they also got a tour of the clubhouse. There were kids from the ages of 4 to 12 and from all skill levels. They got to ask the players questions and learn some very good mechanical basics. After is was over, each kid got a baseball and then the team members that did the clinic sat at tables for autographs. Both Michael and Christopher had their gloves and the new baseballs signed by Gary Patchett, an infielder that has played with the Bees since the beginning of the season in 2007. Some of the other players that taught at the clinic were infielder Freddy Sandoval, catcher Bobby Wilson, outfielder Coby Smith, and pitcher David Austen. Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to the next clinic in August!

Christopher has been taking karate since his birthday in November. He has been in two tournaments and placed in both. He got first place in sparring and third in forms at the first tournament and third place again in forms at the second tournament. He plans to test for his yellow stripe in June.

Our Dogs are AWESOME!

Chi Chi Rodriguez is the white dog and she is an 11 month old maltese. We have had her for 9 months. Cholo is the tan dog and he is a 2 year old chihuahua/corgi mix. We have only had him for three weeks. They are the cutest and coolest dogs ever and we love them a lot.

They chase each other all day and make us laugh when they play.

The beginning in the middle....

Well, we've decided to jump on the bandwagon. This is the first post to our blog and although we are beginning to chronicle things in the middle of our childhood instead of the beginning, we hope you will like it anyway.
